John Deere rotary cutters lead the way with innovative design, superior performance, and proven durability. Valuable features are included such as the Double-Deckerâ„¢ design and Max Flow cutting chamber, which prevent water and debris from accumulating on the smooth, dome-shaped top deck while the flat bottom deck absorbs the punishment from rocks and stumps. The top deck stays smooth - no dents, no dings, no holes. The internal supports sandwiched between the top and bottom decks are key to the smooth and structure-free Max Flow cutting chamber, while at the same time provide added strength and durability. To help promote safe operation, John Deere rotary cutters are equipped with front and rear safety-chain shields. John Deere rotary cutters continue to advance in value with larger, more powerful gearboxes, redesigned blade holders, and updated constant-velocity (CV) drivelines (special to the flex-wing models).
Here are situations when a rotary cutter is needed:.
I bought a used JD HX 10 pull-type this year. Use it on my JD 4520. The hardest part for me is getting the mower started with the 4520. I am a little on the small end for getting the thing turning.
You will have no problem with you bigger. Mine has a CV pto shaft. I suspect the MX 10 does too. The CV shafts are just heavy to lift. Mine is 540 pto, which combined with the CV shaft allows really tight turns. I have a 15' bat wing JD HX 15 with 1000 pto CV shaft and it will not turn as tightly. The HX 15 shaft is even heavier and usually a 2 man job. I can put the pto on the HX 10 by myself.
What I do is place wooden blocks on the hitch at the pto height. Then set the pto on the blocks and slide it on. Then I only have to align the shaft and slide it on without having to hold the pto in the air as I try to align the splines. I mow some 3' cedars and brush with both mowers. Just take it slow over the bigger stuff. Heavy grass bogs down the tractor more than trees or brush. Both of my HX's were bought used but in excellent shape.

I have had no issues with either. The mid duty MX has a bit thinner deck and skirt than the HX. Gear boxes rated for a few less hp. Toyota harrier new model. MX 10 weighs about 300#s less than HX 10.
The MX 10 should be a good mower but I would have no problems owning a Bush Hog either. My HX 15 weighs almost twice as much as my HX 10.

I have a slewing MX 10. I am able to mount it to a Hesston 100 90 DT without any help. Attaching the PTO shaft is not really any trouble, especially if I leave the mower centered on its slewing axis. The tractor's lower links extend, and that makes hooking the mower up pretty easy. Extend the links, attach them and back up till they lock up. I have no complaints about the mower, it has been good to me and I have abused it, unintentionally, but that is what it took for me to find all the rocks in my orchard over the years.
If you have specific questions, ask away. Hello everyone. I am going to purchase a 10' pull type rotary cutter. Right now I have narrowed it down to Bush Hog or JD. I borrowed a freinds BH 3210 and liked the way it cut.
The only problem I had was with the weight of the drive shaft. I found it difficult to support the weight, pull back the collar, and alighn the shaft. I have seen that the JD has an intermediate shaft and thought it might be much easier to attach. Anyone had experince with the MX10? Thoughts and input are most welcome. The bush hogs are just overall a better mower in my opinion. The 3210 is a heavy duty mower and the mx10 is a medium duty mower which may make the shaft a little bit lighter to lift. I have a bush hog 3126 and it is a job to get the shaft on.
I also have a jd hx15 and its a nightmare to hook up i always dread it. Jd makes a really good mower but in my opinion nothing compares to a true bush hog brand. Cant comment on the MX - ours is a old Howse. But the cut of our twin blade10' is really nice. With a 'high speed, 1:1.76 ish' gear boxes those 5'+ blades are making some speed!
Do you know what the gearboxes are rated for? Who makes them?
What about the 'slip clutch' and drive line? Hows the frame look? I saw a single blade 8' at my shortline guys shop - IT WAS HUGE. BE CAREFULL of the extra width - I have yet to ding my 8' but. Had to do some wellhouse repair last time the FIL hooked up to the 10' he pulls it with a Fiat-Hesston 566 - darn good looking tractor but I just hate gear/clutch/all them knobs - call me spoiled. One thing I did find out was that a 7 or 8 or 10 foot twin was around the same money so go for all your tractor can handle.
OK, I have read the MX 6 manual twice and I still don't see the answer. How in the heck do I change the gearbox oil on my MX6? I checked the oil this weekend and it looked like margerine. img/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif/img I'm guessing condensation got into the gearbox so I want to change the oil. I don't see a drain plug.

Is it under the cutter? There are four bolts on the top the gear box. Do you take these off and remove the top plate? How often is one supposed to change the gear oil? I did not see that in the manual either. Thanks, Dan McCarty. Dan, ( I checked the oil this weekend and it looked like margerine.
) I have an MX5 which has the same gearbox. I looked in the technical manual (MX5 - MX10, HX10, HX14) and the only instruction that I can find for draining the oil is listed under the Disassemble Gear Case section. Remove four cap screws (A) and cover (B). Drain oil from gear case. This takes place after the gear case has been removed from the mower.
Looks to me like there is no provision to drain the oil as a part of routine maintenance. Looking at the design of the case, I suspect that it will have to be inverted to drain completely. Water is heavier than oil and will go to the lowest point, which is the bottom bearing. Even if there was a drain plug in the case, you would only be diluting the water with a drain and refill. For what its worth, the gear oil in my MX5 has looked like margarine (light yellow in color - almost white) since I bought the machine new three years ago. Jim, I talked with the dealer and he said it can look like butter if it has been running due to air getting into the oil.
But I had not run the cutter I had moved the tractor before checking but I doubt that would have done anything. I'm going to check before I move the tractor and see if there is a difference. I'm sure I'll be chaning oil. He said to remove the four bolts at the top of the gear box and take off the plate as I suspected. Then it is hand pump time. img/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif/img Later, Dan. This past week I stopped at WallyWorld and bought two quarts of GL5 grear oil for the MX 6.
I could not find my old gear case hand pump so I stopped at NAPA and had two spend $12 on a real nice metal hand pump. If I don't loose this one it should last a lifet time. 8-) I had other chores to do and it was the end of the day before I made it to the tractor. Get everything setup to change the oil and I pulled the bolt/dip stick one more time. This time I get an idea. Sure wish I had this idea a couple weeks ago. The idea was to, get ready for this, TOUCH the oil!
It felt like oil. Smelt like oil.
Ran like oil. The tractor has been sitting for a couple of weeks so if there was water in there it should have seperated by now. Looks like this gear oil is yellow in color.
img/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif/img One thing that did bother me as I looked at the bolts holding the cover to the gear box, is I did not have a gasket or the gasket in a tube stuff. I think my new hand pump could have taken the oil out of the dip stick tube if I had to remove the oil. Dan, ( It felt like oil. Smelt like oil.

( One thing that did bother me as I looked at the bolts holding the cover to the gear box, is I did not have a gasket or the gasket in a tube stuff. ) According to the service manual you should use a cure primer of some sort to clean both surfaces and Ultra-Blue RTV or equivilant for the gasket. The exploded drawings don't show any type of paper or cork gasket.
